I have been waiting for the chance to present our chocolate in some new markets...we considered trying to distribute chocolate through the grocery stores in Costa Rica but right away met with some push back. The first grocery store owner we talked to about placing chocolate was very concerned about placing the chocolate in the isles where his customers can easily steal the items. He also said that they have other products near the cash register which would be displaced.
Since the door to supermarkets seems mostly closed for now, we looked for another way. It was that same week that we had record sales of chocolate in our little farmer's market in Puerto Viejo. Lightbulb! Farmer's markets are a great way to sell our gourmet, organic, artisan chocolate. The very same week we were invited to try out the Feria Verde (green market) in San Jose.
Last Saturday was the first showing of our product in this market. Early indications are telling me that this is a good idea. We sold lots of chocolate and made many contacts of people interested in selling our chocolate in their shops!
